Botox: Your Guide to a Smoother, More Natural You

By Maggie Richard, RN, BSN

What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved neuromodulator made from botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. Results typically last 3 to 4 months.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neuromodulator derived from a naturally occurring protein. It works by gently relaxing the specific facial muscles responsible for repetitive movements: the ones that create expression lines over time. Think of the furrow between your brows when you concentrate, the squint lines at the corners of your eyes, the forehead creases when you raise your eyebrows.

There are two types of wrinkles worth knowing about:

  • Dynamic wrinkles, formed by muscle movement, respond well to Botox.

  • Static wrinkles are present even at rest, caused by sun exposure, volume loss, and time. Botox softens these, but it works best alongside other aesthetic treatments for deeper lines.

The science is clinically proven, the results are natural when administered thoughtfully, and the process is far simpler than most people expect.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Age and Skin Goals

Most patients start Botox in their late 20s to early 40s, and there is no single "right" age. We approach it two ways:

  • Corrective treatment: smoothing lines that have already formed, restoring a naturally refreshed look.

  • Preventative treatment ("Baby Botox"): smaller doses for those in their 20s or early 30s who want to get ahead of deeper lines before they develop. It is intentional care, not vanity.

Your Health and Expectations

Good candidates are those in good health who do not have certain neuromuscular conditions (such as myasthenia gravis or ALS). Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Most importantly, we talk openly about what Botox does and does not do, because realistic expectations and honest communication are the foundation of results you will love.

What You Are Hoping to Feel

The best candidates are not chasing perfection. They want to feel like themselves: more rested, more confident, more at ease in their skin. If that resonates, you are in the right place.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your Consultation

Before a single needle is placed, your provider sits down and listens. At Aesthetic Journey, Maggie Richard, RN, BSN, and Maureen Garrett, RN, BSN, bring a personalized approach to every consultation. We assess your facial anatomy, look at your movement patterns, talk through your goals, and give you a clear picture of what treatment would look like, including the number of units, areas to address, and realistic outcomes. No pressure, no upsell. Clarity and care.

The Treatment Process

The injections themselves take about 10 to 15 minutes. Here is what happens:

  1. Cleansing: The treatment area is cleaned and prepped.

  2. Mapping: Injection points are marked as a guide for precision placement.

  3. Injections: Using an ultra-fine needle, small amounts of Botox are placed into targeted muscles. Most patients describe it as a tiny pinch, brief and minimal.

  4. Aftercare guidance: Before you leave, we walk you through exactly how to care for your skin over the next 24 to 48 hours.

At Aesthetic Journey in San Clemente, every appointment is a collaboration. You will always know what is being done and why.

Aftercare and Your Results

Results begin to show within 3 to 5 days, with full effects visible around two weeks. You will notice a natural softening: lines that used to be prominent become much less defined, while your expressions remain fully intact. The goal is never a frozen look. It is you, elevated.

A few aftercare notes to keep in mind:

  • Avoid lying down or intense exercise for the first few hours

  • Skip facials, saunas, or face-touching immediately after treatment

  • Stay upright and give the product time to settle

Results typically last about 3 to 4 months. Every patient metabolizes neurotoxin differently, and factors like muscle strength, lifestyle, and dosing all play a role. With consistent treatments, results tend to become more predictable, though adjustments in dosing are sometimes needed to maintain balanced, natural-looking outcomes.
